New FFR LCA Retrofitted with Heim Joints
« on: October 25, 2011, 09:39:48 pm »
Our fellow CACCer, Lare Bear, retrofitted my new FFR LCAs with heim joint ends.  After learning about the potential problems with the FFR LCA binding and/or bushing ends tearing from the mounting ears on the frame, I decided to switch to heim joints.  Really nice workmanship. Thanks Larry!   O0

what's the load rating on those rod ends?  They look about 1/2 the size of the QA1 XMR12 Chromoly ends that most of us are using with the "Fast Fred" control arm mod.

Hey! Those look like the ones I made for Larry and installed on his car, except wussy. We all used 3/4 ends with SS misalignment bushings. The rod ends are max'd out without them.

I'm contacting the patent infrindgement office today.

Really!?  I posted this thread here to give props to Larry for his work that I asked him to do for me.  I don't know the load ratings for the parts used to make the mod.  There are other FFR owners that used the same parts for their LCA mod.  This gives me the impression that these parts used are sufficient to handle the load imposed on them.

Fred, I asked you first if you could make the mod and you mentioned you no longer do them as you no longer have the jig.  You also mentioned that Larry may be able to do them.  So, I went to Larry.
Before doing the work,  Larry asked me if I contacted you first as he knew that you had done these mods in the past.

When you read Fred's responses, you have to imagine him saying the words....listen to it in your head....and then figure out where to insert appropriate smiley's.  He always forgets to insert them.   ;)

These rod ends are QA1 Precision Products PCMR10-12T, rating at 23,000 #'s. They are still 3/4" Chromoly w/ Teflon lining, but allow for the high angle without having to use the SS bushings. The mounting bolts to the chassis are still 5/8". These are the same ones most of the guys on FFC are using for track cars.

23,000 is more than I expected, but still a fair amount less than the 28,081 of the XMR12's.

Has any stress test analysis been done on the intended use to come up 28K being the needed amount?

I didn't say 28k was needed.  I have no idea what the loads are or if anybody has ever done the calcs.  Just pointed out that those rod ends are smaller than the popular XMR12's.   As far as I know, Fred had some insight from QA1 and Aurora regarding the intended use when he did the first mod.  They could both be way overkill for all I know.

Just curious. Glad you chimed in, I spoke to Factory Five and they also use the XMR12's on the IRS. Just as an FYI, the engineer also commented that the XMR12's were way overkill. They had a problem with aluminum ones breaking. Crazy that they started with aluminum, but jumping right to the toughest closes issue:)

Thanks for the your concern, we will be swapping them out.

Don't forget the high misalignment spacers to bush the 3/4" bore down to the 5/8" bolt.

I just drove 650 miles dragging a trailer so I'm not at my best. I do have the fixture and it is and has been available to anyone who wants to do the mod properly, I guess you misunderstood Troy. Many have borrowed it and I've always been happy to share the part#'s as Wade will attest. I don't do them mainly because I no longer have Larry's old lathe which I needed to make to right spacers

Larry knows I have the fixture and all he needed to do was ask. I'm always helpful, sometimes to a fault. I'm sure it will be fine.

650 miles :elder: Did you go pick up your new race car?

Crap, didn't know the jig was available to barrow. No worries on the mod being done "properly", I ended up making a jig. I guess I misunderstood that is was available :P
