America's Dog - Meet Archer (with Pix)
« on: January 04, 2012, 01:52:50 pm »
In honor of the new addition to our home, Archer, a 10 week old rescued American Pitbull Terrier (pictures to follow), here's two reminders of what Americans knew about this breed for over 100 years, before the likes of Vick and other gangbanging, dogfighting assholes got a hold of them:

GOOD FOR YOU, BEN.

RESCUE DOGS ARE THE GREATEST.  I CURRENTLY HAVE TWO OF THEM.   I DO PREFER GERMAN SHEPHERDS THOUGH.  OF COURSE THEY ALSO HAVE AN ILL DESERVED REPUTATION IN SOME CIRCLES.

DOGS - - ALL DOGS - - RESPOND TO THE ATTITUDES AND CARE GIVEN BY THEIR HUMAN COMPANIONS.  (QUITE UNLIKE SOME PEOPLE.)

PIT BULLS ARE GREAT DOGS AND ONE OF MY FAVORITE BREEDS.   I'VE NEVER MET ONE THAT I DIDN'T LIKE.

TAKE GOOD CARE OF ARCHER AND HE WILL RETURN THE FAVOR.

THANKS FOR THE NEAT ARTICLES.

VERY BEST WISHES TO BOTH OF YOU.

BLACKJACK AND MATTIE AND LOGAN.

Ben,

Let us not forget about 'ol Petey from Lil Rascals.   ;)  Thanks for sharing those articles.  What a great addition to your family.

Jack Russells, plural?  Thats a handful!

I totally agree.  Unlike people, you know where you stand with a dog at all times.

Ben:
I had two pit bulls. Both females and fabulous pets. Great athletes, loyal, and yes reliable baby sitter and protector. Both enjoyed playing with other dogs, killed multiple rabid raccoons, snakes, snakes, and rats. One of them loved to get one of my horses to chase her around the pasture just for the joy of it. The only time they would get into a fight with another dog was when a larger dog would start something. Neither were aggressive  with a smaller dog.
Unfortunately, the macho folks have abused and nearly ruined this breed (ally fights, scatter breeding, etc.) :knuppel2: When they do break bad they are horrific due to their strength and violent shaking. They do not go for the throat like a doberman but grab any part and shake. My council is to neuter and then properly socialize the pup. While lots of fun for both of you, do not play tug of war as it teaches them aggressive behavior.
I wish you the same joy with you new family member as we had with ours.

Thanks, Bill.  He's already neutered.  Your advice is good.  I have raised several of these guys from pups.  Most recently, Stella, a 75 lb. American Bulldog, who we lost last year after 14.5 wonderful years. They are amazing athletes.  One stud I co-owned in Hawaii could dive underwater, with his eyes open, and fetch sunken objects of considerable weight from the bottom.  He could scale a ten foot vertical wall.  He was poisoned with Paraquat by shitbag locals when we refused to sell or breed to them.

If you want to let him blow off some steam and socialize with a pair of boxers and several yard apes just bring him to the grease up this week and then let him loose in my yard - fully fenced, plenty big and nothing of value that hasn't been chewed or peed upon.  And my wife is the Diane Goodall of rescue dogs....  She may not let you leave with him on second thought!!!

Good looking dog Ben.

My Mom & Dad "inherited" a pit bull. At first they were concerned with him around the grandkids due to the breed's reputation. Turns out to be one of the best dogs I/they’ve come across.

Great/gentle with the kids and won’t leave my Dad’s side……..he’s a real character.

Congratulations.

Thanks to all.  He does need to play with other dogs.

In his foster home, there were another Pitbull and a 100 lb. (!) Lab.  Friend is coming over Friday with some dogs.

We intend to expose him to everything, so you'll likely meet him at tow-in events.
