Paging Dr. Wilkins....
« on: December 30, 2003, 09:34:03 pm »
Well, I resolved my surging idle problem and, just as Ford Guru Wade predicted, (God, I hate to type this  ) my suction pipe is too short.  8O
But, personal problems aside, the intake for the blower is too short and backlash from the impeller blades is indeed messing with the MAF. (I cribbed that from an e-mail with Wade) Short version, I need to make the same type of pipe Wade used or use the "dryer vent hose" that came from Vortech, which is just ugly.
Which, in a typically longwinded fashion, brings us to the title of the post.

Mr. Wilkins, are you up to welding some pipe together?

Happy New Year!

Hey "shortpipe", I've got a couple of the vortech 3.5" plastic elbows and some blue silicone couplings you could use in the interim.  Or, Greg's PVC pipe idea works too (a LOT of mustangers go that way).

If you've got room at the blower inlet to come out almost straight, your best bet is to run a straight piece of tubing towards the back of the car and put the MAF meter over top of the passenger footbox.  You'll pick up about 1# of boost if you don't have any elbows.

BTW, it's "backwash", not "backlash".

I might use the elbows for the time being just to see if they work in concept. As for the PVC...um, no. Unless I paint it black...hmmm, must think on that one. I hate to put it this way, but since we're all hung-up with "lengths", how long does that pipe need to be before it's far enough from the impeller?

I was planning to put my heater box on top of the footwell, so it might be back to the drawing board.

Backlash, backwash, whatever. My "shortpipe" thought it was working with a rearend. (Differential that is!)

Thanks! (For the laugh, if nothing else!)

I'd rather drink the backwash! :D:D:D

shortpipe - I'd say about 16" or more would be good if you have the room.  Otherwise, do the double 90° like I did.

Ok, the naming committee is in session. Henceforth, should John be known as "Backwash" or "Shortpipe".

And uh....John, you don't get to vote. :P

I KNEW I shouldn't have typed that!

This is just wrong! But given the levels of malicious creativity in this club, I guess I'm getting off lucky.

Besides, this is temporary right?

Right?

Anyway, if the Naming Committee is using this thread as material, 16" would be much closer to the truth!  Honest!

Yes, shortpipe, it's temporary.  As soon as we find a better nickname that you hate even worse, we'll change it. :D

I just finished reading Tina this whole thread in an attempt to explain how I ended up with a new nickname. She only has one question, and you can take this many ways, "who let the cat out of the bag?"
