Snell Helmet Suggestions?
« on: March 06, 2010, 10:07:20 pm »
I need to get a SA 2005 helmet for some high speed track events.

I kind of like the idea for an open face model, but I am wondering if any of you seen track restrictions with open face helmets?  Obviously an open face would not provide as much protection as a full face model, but I would like the extra visibility.

Also, anyone know where I may find a deal on an SA 2005 helmet?

Thanks,
Revman

Zamp SA2005 on sale now at Summit for $152... about the cheapest you're going to find anywhere... closed face.

Open faced G-Force for about the same...

If you're not sure, I'd suggest this one...  I might get it myself...

Get a closed face helmet with a large eyeport. Bell makes them among others. Just take a look at the last Grassroots magazine about the Spec Miata fire. Look at the helmet and visor. You really want your face sealed off from any fire.

I suggest you try them on first to see what fits well. OG racing can help you. Open helmet appears more "correct" for a Cobra, but obviously lacks the safety inherent in the full face one. If you wear glasses, a full face helmet is a PIA to deal with.

I switched to HJC from Arai despite Arai's stellar customer service.
HJC's are lightweight and sport a removable and washable liner.
My helmet priorities (other than safety) are weight, comfort and price. None of these helmets should impair your track vision and most of them provide the same crappy venting.

I agree w/ Pappy....you really need to go try some on before you buy.  I had my heart set on a Bell until I went to OG Racing and spent some time trying them on.  My mis-shapen melon made the Bell helmets very uncomfortable.  The only brand that fit was Simpson.  It wasn't my first choice, but having a comfortable helmet is HUGE.  Definitely try some on before you buy....they all have slightly differnet shapes.

Thanks Guys!  I had stumbled across the OG Racing website, but I had no idea that it was in Sterling.  Too cool.  I will have to pay them a visit.

I guess I will forget about the open face helmet idea do to safety reasons.  That Zamp from Summit Racing seems pretty nice.

Who's ready for a track event?   :)

Dan...

I do wear glasses and I use the Bell full face helmet.  I did have to find a set of frames that fit comfortably but it was no big deal.  If you get ones with a straight ear piece that are not wire you can get them on and off easily and the helmet keeps them from moving around.  In the event of any type of incident a full face will keep all sorts of crap out of your face.

I do wear glasses and I use the Bell full face helmet.

Same here with no problems. I do have to take my glasses off of course to get the helmet on. My biggest problem was when I left my glasses on my knee and didn't realize it until lap 2 of a qual session. Not easy putting glasses on at speed. :uglystupid2:
