Skyline Drive Spring Cruise (UPDATE)
« on: March 10, 2010, 08:31:25 pm »
Time to dust of the c***a or coupe and head out to the beautiful Shenandoah Mountains for a Skyline Drive cruise.  After this winter, I am sure ready to get out and start off the 2010 driving season with a nice spring cruise.

Don Flanigin and I did a recon trip of the route this past weekend and we were impressed with the route and the scenery.

When is it?

Saturday, April 24th Sure hope that the weather will be in our favor. The rain date will be Saturday, May 8th.  If all fails because of inclement weather, the cruise will be cancelled.

Cruise Route

Meet at the Sheetz gas station on Rt. 15 in Haymarket at 11:00 a.m.Directions:  Take I-66 west to Rt. 15 (Exit #40).  Turn left onto Rt. 15 at the top of the exit ramp.  Look for the Sheetz on your left @ the second traffic light.

1.  Depart Sheetz 11:15 a.m.  Take Rt. 15 South.
2.  At the end of Rt. 15, turn right onto Rt. 29 towards Warrenton
3.  Veer right onto Rt. 29/Rt. 15 towards Warrenton (you'll see signs for this).  Drive through Warrenton.
4.  Turn right onto Rt. 211 west towards Shenandoah National Park.
5.  At the top of the mountain, turn right into the Thornton Gap entrance to Skyline Drive.
6.  Once you are on Skyline Drive, we'll make a rest/photo stop at the Pass Mountain Overlook(on the left side of the  road). After @ 15 min. break, continue north on Skyline Drive.
7.  Turn left into Dicky Ridge Visitor Centerfor the 2nd rest/photo stop.  After @ a 15 min. break, continue north on Skyline Drive.
8.  Once you exit the north end of the park at Front Royal, turn right onto Rt. 340.
9.  Stay in the left lane to continue on Rt. 340 through town.  Follow signs for Rt. 340/522.
10.  Continue on Rt. 340/522 until you're on the north side of I-66.
11.  Once you pass under I-66 look for a shopping center on your right, Riverton Commons.  You will see a Mexican restaurant at the far end of the shopping center.  Turn right at the first light onto Country Club Road, then turn right into the shopping center.  The restaurant will be on your left.  Park in the lot beside the restaurant.  I anticipate a 2:00 p.m. arrival for lunch.

Other Info.

With the help of Doug Wheeler (dcdoug), printable route maps will be added to this thread soon.
Don took some pics while driving along Skyline Drive.  Really nice scenery even with the snow piled up everywhere along the road and overlooks.   :pics:

Okay, that about covers it...and I'm done editing.  O0

Car won't be ready by then. Anyone have a right seat open I'd go.

Troy & Don,

Thanks for all the leg work.
If there are any open seats, I'd appreciate the opportunity to tag along.  :coolsmiley:

If I'm going, I might be bringing my brother. If he ditches, it's open!

I hope to go and if my wife doesn't come, then I will have an open seat. How many wives are planning to come?

I put this on my calendar pending no other conflicts.  Not sure if Anita will be going or not yet (since I haven't told her about it yet!).

I'm all for attending this one, but mine will not be back together from painting by then.  Put me in line for the right seat, if anyone has one left.  PM me if you do....Thanks

I put it on my calendar. I hope to make it. I have a passenger, but if the seat opens up, I'll let you know.
