Replacing axles--problems to avoid?

I'm going to replace my 1995 axles with Fox-length axles using Richard Oben's kit in the next week or so. Any perils or pitfalls to avoid? Do you guys use a gasket or just use Permatex stuff to seal the differential cover?

no real pitfalls.  I use Ultra-Grey or The Right Stuff.  The latter works better, but is more difficult to remove later.  No gasket.

If the old axles have any spalling on the bearing surfaces or wear at the seal surface, you might consider replacement of bearings/seals at the same time.  Oh, and if your trac-lock needs to be rebuilt, now would be the time.

Here's a problem to avoid... When you pull the axles out, be sure that your spider gear stays in perfect alignment with your gears in the pumpkin.  In other words, be careful not to rotate that assembly when the axles aren't engaged.  Otherwise, it's a reasonably simple job.

Refill with Mobil 1 synthetic lube and 1 bottle of friction modifier. If you rebuild the posi, have fun with the "S" spring.

if you use Mobil1, you don't need the friction modifier.  On the "S" spring, compress it in a vice then put a hose clamp around it to keep it compressed.  Start the edge of the spring back in between the side gears, remove the clamp (I usually have to cut it w/ snips), then hammer the spring home.  Or forget the clamp, hold it in place, and give it a REALLY good whack w/ a deadblow.

Thanks, guys! Did it this weekend.  Peter, I had the problem you mentioned, but I still had one axle on at the time and realized what was going on. I was able to rotate it back the same amount to get things lined up again. Old axles and bearings looked fine. Seals needed to be replaced, though. Didn't rebuild the traction lock. Didn't use Mobil 1 but used the friction modifier with Valvoline synthetic gear oil. Turned out fine, except I wish that I looked before I crouched down and sat on the quick jack 8O !
