All I have right now for tires are the A6's...and I don't want to burn them up.   :?

I had hoped to make it, but my engine build is stuck in reverse.  I started with a new complete shortblock, now I have a gutted shortblock with a date with a machine shop on Friday.  Turns out no-one can build me the camshaft I want (small) with the oversize cam bearings currently in the block.  So a disassembly was required, with new standard cam bearings going in this weekend.  Sigh...

Anyone need help? I may show anyway to hang out, etc...  ed

Much as I'd love to . . . middle of the workweek?

Not bloody likely. . . .  Trying to hang on to my job in these parlous times.

Unlike Brother Herb, I haven't yet retired even once yet. Probably will be working as long as the work lasts.

Baby needs a new pair of Hoosiers.

ED -- You can borrow Sam's blue '95 Mustang.    I think Don will probably take the red Porsche

Car runs great, I've got tons of tires, and time. I'm even almost retired...not by choice.

Those who showed up yesterday for the Fourth Annual Colonial Challenge Cup were rewarded with remarkably good weather and plenty of track time. Along with the usual track cars, there were some interesting entries including a Tesla and a Bizzarrini.

Dervish (with 2 cars as usual), CB, Mark, Woody, and Elder arrived early. The skies were not looking too good and we switched to the rain tires for the first heat. Summit had just repaved the corners that had become corrugated asphalt last year and although smooth, they were slipperier than goose poop. However, by 11 the rain had stopped and the track had dried out-at least on the driving line. By lunch hour, the sun had emerged and with 60° temps, the track warmed up and made for excellent track conditions. And the new asphalt is great when dry.

Don "Small-ball" showed up mid day to get some seat time in Dervish's new 4WD Porsche at the skid pad in preparation for OneLap. And Daniel abandoned the George Mason campus for some "drive-alongs". He was rewarded with hot laps in TrakCar, the Daytona Coupe and the Ariel. Being politically savvy, Daniel refrained from saying which car he preferred to ride in, but there was a permanent grin on his face after getting out of the Atom.

Unfortunately, there are no Dervish off-track anecdotes to report. Other than being summarily thrown out of the Shenandoah Skidpad by the State Dept, it was uneventful. Joe was registered as an instructor (what were they thinking?), and rode along with CB in his attempt to break the 2.00 minute mark. Fortunately, for CB, Dervish later abandoned his job in search of skidpads and I jumped into the passenger seat to try to undo all the bad habits Bill learned earlier in the day. By the end of the last heat, CB had broken into the mid 1.40s.

The organizers provided a tasty BBQ dinner with all the trimmings and (gasp) bottles of PINOT GRIGIO! Needless the say, the day turned out to be first rate.

Outstanding writeup and sounds like a great day!  I wish that work did not interfere so much with real life.

Great improvement, there, CB.  Now forget everything Elder and Dervish told you and just drive.

Out of curiosity, how did the Tesla do?  I hear they run very hard tires to reduce rolling resistance, which are not so good for cornering.

I was wondering how this event turned out, as it was raining pretty good down here all morning.  I hate I missed it,  but I'll get done eventually.  Eventually.  Hopefully.  Building a track car with a mishmash of parts not designed for that particular car is a frustrating experience.  For instance, I'm putting a triple disk clutch (ex-Nascar = CHEAP!) and flywheel in - bought a 157 tooth FW so I could use my standard starter.  The 157 tooth (stock size) are about twice the cost of a 153 tooth one.  New ford nascar use the 153, but you have to use a specific starter. Thought I'd save the cost of a new starter and spend more for the flywheel.  Bolted it together yesterday, now I have to buy a new starter anyway because the gear offset is different.  And the new starter with the offset for a 157 tooth flywheel is twice the cost of a used 153 tooth starter... Sigh...
One day, one day....  :?

Hey Guys... Knocking 20 seconds off my lap time is no small feat, especially for some rookie instructors. First Dervish, driving the Black Stallion, demonstrated to me that the car would not self distruct at red line and then offered great encouragement from the instructor's seat by yelling, "Your not squealing, I want more Squealing!!!!". Initially I was uncomfortable with these instructions, and then I realized that we were in West Vir. and one should expect this type of behavior. Joe was very helpful and thoughtful as an instructor. I will vouch for his sphinctor integrity which was tested often as we came into turn one on a wet track. Its amazing just how far that car can slide before it gets grip. The ride alongs were very helpful as well.
While Joe was stealing skid pad time, Elder jumped in and took my counciling to a whole new level. His encouragement pushed me well beyond my traditonal comfort zone and eventually found me enjoying pass bys in lieu of my normal blue flag sightings.
The ride-alongs in the FOG Mustang were most instructive... once I got the fire extinguished from my shoe which was ignited by his carpetless floor board. I now understand the real meaning of "Hot Shoe".
You guys are great!  I very much appreciate your friendship, patience and council. All Good. Went home sqealin' like a pig!
