460 oil pressure eye-opener!
« on: May 17, 2010, 03:11:36 pm »
I just put this on my web site. Thought others might find it of interest also:

Quote
I've just put up a thread on the Club Cobra site here:

http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/showthread.php?t=104555

It has a reference to the Jon Kaase thread on the 460ford web site. He describes loss of oil pressure on the (gulp) dyno! No racing, just revs.

I don't know if other engines have this problem, so I'm not sure anyone else is interested. That said, I've seen late Ford mod-motors (4.6, 5.4) having failures due to loss of oil pressure (definitely at Sebring) and maybe some of the small blocks and the FEs as well.

The issue is that the oil pan causes loss of oil pressure, mostly at higher rpms. Not the pump, not the pickup, not the scraper, not the windage trays, not the trap doors, the oil pan itself!

Note: my Canton "road race" pan does this :-o

I hope enough folks contribute to these threads that we can come up with some real answers....

Indy,
We're about to install a 545 ci 460 with a Canton #13-766 Drag race pan. I noticed on the dyno sheet (below), a similar oil pressure drop from 72.6 PSI @4400 rpm to 66.8 PSI @6000 rpm. Certainly not as dramatic as Kaase's experience which went from 60 to 48 PSI but at much higher RPMs. I'm not sure I should be concerned since ~66 PSI at 6000 is very satisfactory.

What say you?

According to his later posts, it looks as if the windage tray may be an contributing factor.

Elder,

I see at least one other CACC'er has perspicacity  O0

I hope there will be an Accusump on the 545, unless the thing never sees a track!

We fixed the small carb problem... O0

The dyno sheet was with an 850, so we replaced it with a 1050 (new hp/torque numbers kept confidential so as not to further jeopardize my marriage)...

That's very interesting.  I have noticed that I can see a similar drop which is visibile on the gauge at high rpms on my 411 Windsor though the Accusump keeps it from going through the floor.  This is when running up the engine in neutral sitting still.  Have been generally too busy to watch it when running.  I think that I'll put a camera on the gauge at the next autocross and see what happens under a real load since I regularly bang the rev limiter.
