Broke...
« Reply #16 on: August 23, 2010, 01:50:49 pm »
Guys, not going to make it this week...  :? :? :?  Went to load the car yesterday morning, thought I'd take it for a brief drive just to make sure all was well.  After the last VIR event I rebuilt the rear, thinking the excessive backlash was the cause of the drivetrain noise.  Well the noise was still there, only louder w/o the helmet on!  Definite transmission problem.  Put the car on the lift, pulled it out and took it apart...

Busted 3rd gear on countershaft...  main gear cluster is fine.  Waiting to hear what the repair will cost both in time and $$$

Cancelling this late costs me 1/2 of the entry fee.  Anyone want a 2 day event at VIR for only $200???

Wow - sorry to hear that Ed.  Was looking forward to seeing you run.  I'm going again with SVT Cobra Club Oct 16-17 - full course both days.

WTF Ed....wasn't that the super tough G Force T5 that you just had built? Don't you have only a half dozen track days on that box? Is their work warrantied?

I thought it was still a Levy box that was rebuilt with the new super-zoomy high alloy gears.

Wade, that sounds correct.

...same questions...WTF? Any warranty?

I still have the loaner 302 but no spare T-5s.

Ed why don't you drive the Cobra rather than scrapping the entire event?

Elder;  The transmission was built by Travis Blazer of Levy Racing East.  New trans, nothing used from my previous box.  And yeah, the high alloy gear set was used, I think they get the gears from Astro Performance...   Should not have broken, but then some of us are just lucky.  Not due to my talented shifting either, notice the synchros are perfect, none are rounded off.  No bangin' on it, no wheel hopping like last year - the new rear suspension geometry seems to be working in that aspect at least.

It broke on it's 6th track weekend...  4 events last year after installing the trans in April/May (I think) , VIR in July was only the 2nd this year.

This trans has a 26 spline input shaft, so a normal T5 wont work w/o changing the clutch...

Cobra is no where near track ready - the one time I did have it on track it got very light at speeds over 100...  the brakes aren't track worthy, nor are the tires...    I've thought about putting the trans back together and run it w/o 3rd gear, but I don't know that I've got time.  I may show up to "instruct"... or nag, or drink beer and watch.  Or drink beer and instruct... :crazy2:

Who's got an open passenger seat?   :smitten:

I do, come on down and hang with us. And you can do some runs on the Grand Course to see how you like it-just don't expect to see the lap times you're used to.

come on down and hang with us.

I may do that... I spoke w/ Travis today, he's wondering if there's some defect w/ the parts.  He's hoping he can get Astro to give him another 3rd gear. Apparently the countershafts for these gear sets have replaceable gears, not a one piece unit like stock. So in any case it shouldn't be too $$$ to fix it.   So the plan right now is to drive to Charlotte tomorrow, drop the tranny off tomorrow night late, spend the night somewhere and drive to VIR Thursday.  I'll bring my stuff so I can ride along...
