SNOW
« on: January 27, 2011, 09:53:40 am »
I got home to 12" of fresh white stuff last night. ::)

If I had a second home, Arizona would look attractive during the winter.

Just venting. :D :D

I'm thinking more seriously of warmer climates.  It took almost 2 hours to go the 10 miles from Herndon to Ashburn.

Lost power/heat/phone/internet/running water at 7PM last night.
Starting around 9PM the branches started coming down.

A branch as big as a small tree came off a pine tree and clobbered the roof that I replaced not two months ago, and another branch came down like a spear onto one of my AC heads.... luckily I'd put plywood "lids" on my coils to keep junk/kids/spears out of them!

So - fire in the fireplace insert with my Cobra battery driving the inverter to spin the blower on the fireplace, generator running to keep the freezers running, and butane burner to make coffee/soup/hot chocolate.

Suburban camping!

This weekend will be yet another NVa chainsaw massacre, I have some nasty splits high in my maples that have to come down.  I'm also going to find a way to wire up my 240v water pump to the generator so that we can flush without a bucket!

Stay safe everyone!

I am suburban camping too. We had a large branch the size of a small tree fall on the powerlines to our house, but somehow it only broke 1 of them (there are 3). We had a few others fall too, but not on anything important. So I have partial power, but unfortunately no heat. I have random lights and plugs with power around the house and am using space heaters to heat a couple of rooms plus a fireplace. But since I can't plug more than one space heater into a circuit without popping the breaker, I also have extension cords snaking around the house to allow me more than one space heater in a room.

We have a newborn, so have to keep her warm.

Since other houses on my block have power and it's only my house, I'm sure I will be 21,999 to get fixed out of the 22,000 people without power in DC.....I figure I have the better part of a week to suck it up.  :elder:

The upside is I now own a small chainsaw, which was a big help in cleaning up and something every man should have.

Sorry Doug to hear about your problem. Maybe you will get lucky. I lost power yesterday morning and it didn't come back on until 3:00 PM. Ther house dropped 10 degrees in that time span.

Sheeeeeet!!! it started snowing again and I was going to go to the Brogue. I miss my buddies.

Arizona  or Fla.      it all sounds good. Never thought I would say that.

I do have partial power and and am doing to move the radiator pump circuit to an active part of the box temporarily. We will be toasty by tonight. I think it's going to be a while before PEPCO can fix our power since it's just for one house.

What snow ???  Had the Cobra out terrorizing the locals, only kidding.

Feel sorry for you northeners, we only got a couple of inches in Southern Maryland and if it wasn't for the snow plow pushing snow into the driveway wouldn't have even pulled the snow shovel out   :coolsmiley:

So I improvised a power source for our boiler ignition/radiator circulation pump and got the heat back on. Two minutes after the boiler fired up (and I'm starting to feel pretty good about myself) as I am walking upstairs, zap, the WHOLE house loses power. I'm thinking WTF, I couldn't have done anything to do that (but that little voice inside my head was saying, "You sure"? ???)

Then I hear a knock at the door. PEPCO is here to fix it right. A bit over an hour later, I have brand new service wires to my house and it is lit up like an Xmas tree!

Looks like I might make it to breakfast tomorrow afterall!

That'll teach ya..........you should've started "improvising" 15 minutes after the power went out........Pepco would've shown up an hour after you started. ;)

Snow is good. I've been plowing and salting for 3 days. Can you say Cha ching??? :D. One of my salting rigs lost the brake system on the beltway and we worked it for 2 days. New brakes, lines, rotors, and calipers.
Doug, I have a 6500 and 13000 watt generator. Let me know if you need one. You'll need a transfer switch installed though. I CRAVE losing power.  :coolsmiley:

We haven't had a power outage since several of my neighbors put in giant generators and 500 Gallon propane tanks a couple of years ago.  I thank them after every big storm.  Also, a big thanks to SMECO for storm proofing our power grid here in SoMD.

BTW, Jim Harding is part of the SMECO team
