Just in case you were not aware, Gary "Chipper" Hughes underwent heart surgery today for a condition he has had for years.
I received the following email this afternoon from Elizabeth:

"Gary is out of surgery.
I just met with his surgeon who said the surgery went well, there weren’t any issues. The aneurysm was “real and inflamed.” The surgeon said Gary has been suffering from this for a long time and it’s very lucky he had the surgery when he did. Otherwise it would have torn at some point which would have meant sudden death.

Gary will be sedated for at least six more hours - the surgeon said it’s not time to celebrate yet. Once they bring him out of sedation they’ll be able to confirm his brain is functioning and there isn’t any bleeding. But this is obviously a wonderful first step.

I’ll send an update when he’s out of sedation. Thanks so much for the prayers and positive thoughts."

The Prez and I plan on visiting him Monday with some "get well" libations. And if needed, the CACC walker.

"My coping mechanism of staying as blissfully ignorant as possible about specifics of the surgery served me very well...right up until my conversation with Dr. Singh this afternoon. I’m thrilled to report though that Gary has successfully passed the “brain functioning” check - at least in my estimation. He’s coming out of sedation and when I told him he got a cow valve he said “moo.” When I jokingly asked what we were going to do tonight and suggested we go out to dinner, Gary said “dinner theater, let’s make a night of it.” He also told me it feels like a “massive person is sitting on my chest.” So not only is his brain fine, his sense of humor is on point.

I really appreciate all the emails, texts and calls today. Your support means so much to us."


I decided instead bringing Gary some single Malt, he may prefer some corn or alfalfa.

I also sense a new nickname here...

Glad to hear all was successful. But, I’m really surprised nobody ran with the “brain functioning” bit!;)

I wonder if I could do the "brain functioning" thing without all that surgery and hospital stuff? If so, I'd try it... :p
 
Wow, glad to hear all is well, my mom went through a rupture on her aorta and was sedated for weeks in ICU. My thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery!
 
Got this email this morning....The Prez and I are going over today, since he may be discharged Monday.

... Gary was moved from ICU to the step down unit last night. He is using his cell because he can’t reach the phone in his room. Room number is 253. I’m not sure on rules for visitors but I think they consider 2-4pm “quiet time.”

It sounds as though he may come home as early as tomorrow, if not, Tuesday. He’s ready for calls/visitors and will be thrilled with the distractions. Thanks for your friendship.

Apparently Chipper, AKA "Moo", is none the worse for wear after his heart surgery. He was in good spirits and stuffing his face when The Prez & I stopped in to visit. He is recuperating very well. He is liklely to be discharged Tuesday. So feel free to stop by and aggravate him Monday.

I have to admit he has some HOT nurses attending to his every need as you can see here. But I suspect in his present condition, he is harmless.
