Hello All - Tim Welch here, new member

The Maryland law currently says that replicas are titled as the year their built, not the year they replicate. If your title says 2019, then Maryland will try to title as 2019. As with anything, you may find some agent not follow current Maryland law. Chris was lucky and found such person. I would bet that Glen Burnie follows the law. OBTW the law does not require replicas to be handled as new cars, so inspection and emissions are not a problem. However, you will not be allowed to register (tags) as historic or street rod if your car is not titled as a 20 plus year old car.

Thanks Ken. I want to track down the same guy Chris used! Only doc I have stating “replica” is the rolling chassis invoice with the VIN. Hope that plus the less descriptive CA title will suffice. Then becomes a question of valuation and tax/fees.

Interestingly, CA BAR fastened a plate to the firewall referring to “1965 Ford V8” - go figure. Wonder if I can use that to my advantage???

Go on line and check to see if your title/vin is in the national database. If not, try invoice only going to chris's guy. If you do see it, so can the maryland dmv, and they will probably go by old title even if not presented. Good luck. Again, no problem getting car on road as newer car, just can't register as old car or run old plates.

I’m in the SF Bay Area and relocate to Annapolis Q3 or 4 of this year. I have a 2019 Superformance Slabside Mk II purchased new from Hillbank Irvine in Sept. Blueprint 347, Holley EFI, T5 trans. Grigio Silverstone, tan leather. Below pics on PCH near Big Sur couple weeks ago.

I’m looking for member guidance on how to register in MD. Car has the CA SB100 process approval; ie smog exempt in CA for life. CA Title “Make” is “SPCNS” (no Model Year) - ie nothing like ”63 Shelby Cobra” on the title. (I’d read somewhere if the title cites the make/year of the car the replica represents, it might be treated as a historic - less painful route? .... anyway, not the case here).

I’m looking at the MVA website, but would appreciate guidance from any View attachment 2177members who have been through the MD registration process. Thanks in advance and look forward to meeting some of you in the fall.

Hey Tim,
Former president of BACC, now member of CACC, living in Northern virginia.
Out of curiosity, does an SB100 cobra garner any premium in CA wrt to price these days.
I was the 6th car to go through the process when it was first introduced, kind of
like a ginea pig for the BACC folks at the time.

Hi not sure if you can quantify $ premium if any of SB100 certification.

I paid a grand + to a consultant working with Superformance/Hillbank Irvine to take mine (new rolling chassis + new powertrain) through the multi-agency process.

SB100 certification is limited to I think 500 annually. Based on fact I got SB100 #200/500 in Sept 2019, the numerical chances of success seem good if the car has basic safety features. (The smog exemption & CHP approvals seem to follow from the DMV approval).

If as a CA resident you buy a similar Cobra out of state, to register it in CA requires SB100 certification at above-mentioned consultant cost (unless you try to navigate BAR, DMV, CHP etc yourself which I hear falls into the Good Luck With That Department).

POn a $75K car, $1500 is 2%.

If as a CA resident I sell my car to another CA resident, I’ll highlight the SB100 certification as an asset though it’s not added as a line item.

(Apparently if you take an SB100 car out of CA, the permanent exemption is voided after 2 or maybe 3 years out of state).

Net, if the car you’re buying to register in CA doesn’t have SB100, it’s going to cost you. But if you sell a car with SB100 a CA buyer, it’s makes the sale easier though it’s not evident you will get paid for it!

hi Chris - just moved here. Cobra still in CA. Its been a mixed experience: drivetrain quality issues, 3 strandings ,$2+K in Labor (warranty covers parts only on Holley & Tremec). 50/50 I'll sell. I can tell you more over a beer, suffice to say after-sales support way less than I'd expect on a high-end discretionary item. Car fully sorted now but combo of above negative energy has taken its toll. We'll see... attended cars and coffee at Ego Alley last Sunday but didnt see any Cobras. Cheers - Tim

Owning a cobra is always a bumpy ride when they don't run/drive right, but when they do, it is the most fun you can have with your clothes on. I say put some miles on it, then see if you can wipe that smile off you face. Welcome to the madness!!!

Since you got it from Hillbank, have you complained to Lance Stander or Rich MacDonald?

Got mine from a dealer in Newport news when the engine was being installed headers didn't lineup. I contacted Lances group and they FedEx two sets of headers to me at no charge and a return label for pick up. I couldn't say enough good things about my dealings with them, and they didn't even ask for a credit card number it was all done at no charge to me.
Some of the best times in my life have been spent with this group of people I wouldn't give up so easy.

Tim, If you bring the car east and still want to sell it, let me know. I really like it. And who doesn't need 2 Cobras?

Thanks for the input guys. I’m frankly so busy settling in here that I’ve not put the Cobra top priority (astounding & unsatisfactory I know). Appreciate the encouragement to battle through. I needed a rest from the drama (I truly wanted to shoot it last stranding on PCH).

I’ll update as things develop.

Merry Christmas all.

Tim

PS Scott assuming it makes it here it won’t be for sale! But your interest noted.

What caused the strandings ?

POS Holley Sniper EFI. It was like an organ that rejected its host. Just miserable. Changed to Holley 4 bbl - no problems and 20%*+ HP.

Sometime when you have time, I'd like to discuss what happened here. We have a local Cobra builder that swears by the Holley Sniper. I was just planning on putting one on an engine I'm building.
